Chocolate Frosting Homemade Recipe

I don’t say this about many things, but I think I could sit down and eat a whole bowl of this chocolate frosting homemade recipe. It’s so creamy and thick and has the perfect amount of chocolate.

I’ve got the best Vanilla Buttercream Frosting Recipe, but I feel like I’ve tried so many chocolate frosting recipes that seemed pretty mediocre. I’m so happy I finally have one that is great!

It doesn’t have a million ingredients, it’s full of chocolate flavor, it’s decadent without being too sweet, and it’s the perfect consistency for decorating cakes.

This recipe is my go-to for my kids’ birthday cakes, cupcakes for friends, and just about any other excuse I can think of. I’ve even sandwiched some frosting between some hot chocolate cookies for an extra chocolatey treat.

And trust me, it’s so easy to make! It only takes about 10 minutes and is so much better than grabbing some from the store.

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • If you don’t want to use shortening or don’t have any in your pantry, you can use 1 cup of butter in its place. The reason I love using shortening in this recipe is that it stabilizes the frosting and helps it to stay perfectly thick even in warmer weather. You will lose that stability if you add butter but it will still taste amazing!
  • This buttercream is the perfect consistency for piping onto cakes, but it’s still soft enough to spread on a cake. Just make sure that your cake is completely cool and preferably chilled before you try to frost it!
  • You can substitute milk, half and half, or coffee creamer in this chocolate frosting recipe pretty easily. You’ll just want to make sure that you add them a little at a time because they are thinner and you don’t want to add too much and end up with a frosting that’s too thin!

Storage

To store your frosting, place it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for about a month. When you are ready to use it you can let it come to room temperature before spreading!

Do I really need to sift my powdered sugar and cocoa powder?

I can’t stress enough how important it is to sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder when you are making chocolate frosting homemade!

Sifting will make sure that there are no lumps in your frosting and that you can spread it easily on any dessert. Especially if you are wanting to cleanly pipe your frosting, sifting is a must!
