  • Here’s how you make the coolest glow in the dark cake. Start by placing your crumb-coated cake in the freezer for about 30 minutes to harden the icing.
  • When the crumb coat has set, remove the cake from the freezer and liberally coat the cake with the black frosting.
  • Add any decorative frosting and piping that you’d like on top or around the cake.
  • Now it’s time to prepare your splatter station! You’ll want to cover the area you’re working (and your clothes) to prevent splatters from getting all over.
  • Add a tiny bit of the Rolkum powder to a tablespoon or so of lemon extract and mix until you have a loose paste consistency similar to that of glue.
  • Use a food-safe paintbrush, spoons, or gloved hands to splatter the color onto the frosted cake.
  • Grab a black light to see the colors glow!

Party Planning Game Ideas

You can’t go wrong with games at a party! There are so many different kinds that will keep the kids entertained and happy. If you want to try out some fun new games, check these three out. Charades, Trivia, or even BINGO.

Bingo is great for younger ones. It’s time your child had an awesome glow party by adding these games to the party!

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • If you are making your own black frosting, here’s the best way to do it. Start with some chocolate frosting and add a few squeezes of black food coloring. Mix the color in and continue adding drops until you get to a rich black color. If you start with vanilla frosting, no matter how much coloring you add it’ll only turn grey. So chocolate frosting is a must!
  • These colors glow best under a black light. You’ll be able to see a bit of glow in the dark, but you’ll really want a black light for this cake to shine. And if you’re throwing a glow-in-the-dark party, black lights will make all your decorations and activities more glowy and fun!
  • This cake decorating technique can be done on a homemade cake, but you can also order a cake from most bakeries. Just ask for a crumb-coated cake and they should be able to help you out. That way you can skip all the work and just do the fun splattering!

Storage

Store your cake in an airtight container or cake dome for up to 4 days.

How long do the colors on this cake glow?

I’m a huge fan of doing things in advance, so thank goodness the glow effect of the Rolkum colors lasts 3-4 days.

If you plan to make the cake ahead of time, the colors should still be glowing brightly when you serve!
